Oglethorpe Basketball Teams to Celebrate 100th Anniversary of Sport at the University

The Oglethorpe basketball programs are set to celebrate the 100th anniversary of basketball at the school on Saturday, as part of an SAA doubleheader against Berry beginning at 6 p.m. The weekend will feature a number of events celebrating Oglethorpe basketball.

There will be a banquet for alumni and friends of the Oglethorpe basketball programs in the Schmidt Recreation Center leading up to the start of the women's basketball game at 6 p.m. That event will feature a coaches' talk with legendary Oglethorpe coaches Garland Pinholster and Jack Berkshire.

Pinholster coached the Stormy Petrels from 1956 through 1966, accruing 180 career wins in that time and leading the Petrels to a national third-place finish at the 1963 NCAA College Division Basketball Tournament. Berkshire coached the Petrels for 25 years, accruing 315 wins, the most ever by an Oglethorpe basketball coach. He led the team to its first NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament berth in 1994, when his squad won the school's first SCAC championship, then took them back to the national tournament with an at-large bid the following season.

At halftime of the men's game against the Berry Vikings, there will be an on-court ceremony welcoming back all of the players, coaches, managers and cheerleaders who have made the first 100 years of Oglethorpe basketball possible.

Saturday will also serve as Senior Night for the men's basketball team, with guards George Andino and Mike Turner, forward Drew Patrick, and center Connor Sigrist all receiving honors before the game.

It should be an exciting night of Oglethorpe basketball to round out the regular season!
