Patrick Mills of the Oglethorpe men's golf team has been named the SAAC Male Athlete of the Week by his peers in the Oglethorpe Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Mills got his spring season off to an outstanding start last week, earning a share of the SAA Men's Golfer of the Week award with this third-place finish at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate in Pine Mountain. The award marks the first such honor of Mills' career. He put up an even-par round of 72 in Tuesday's final round, moving himself into a third-place tie with a 2-day total of 2-over 146, finishing just a single stroke behind a tie for the individual medal.
In the process, he helped his team to vault five spots up the leaderboard on Tuesday, going from a tie for eighth entering the final round to a third-place overall finish at the end of the day. They shot 9-over 297 on Tuesday, the low team score of the round, and finished at 24-over 600 for the tournament, four strokes behind champions Emory.
Mills and the rest of the Petrels will head to Jekyll Island this weekend to host the annual Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational. After that, they'll continue to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, for the Marine Federal Credit Union Intercollegiate Golf Championship, then to Stone Mountain for the Emory Spring Invitational.
