Sophomore Lauren Ransom of the Oglethorpe women's basketball team has been named the Female Stormy Petrel of the Year by her fellow Oglethorpe student-athletes. The award was presented to her at the Fifth Annual Petey Awards on April 30.

Ransom earned her first career SAA Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year award from the league's coaches back in February. In addition to that honor, she also earned the second All-SAA honor of her young career, after taking All-SAA Second Team accolades in 2015-16. She becomes the second Oglethorpe women's basketball player on an All-SAA First Team in the last three seasons, as Ciaira Hughes accomplished the feat in 2014-15.

Ransom enjoyed a truly outstanding defensive year, finishing second in the league in blocks with 1.8 per game and fourth in steals with 1.7 per game. She was the only player to put herself in the top five in both categories.

She has also been a highly accomplished offensive player this season, though, finishing the regular season fifth in the SAA with 12.4 points per game. On top of all that, she's also a top 10 rebounder, averaging 7.4 per game.

She took SAA Player of the Week honors Jan. 23 for averaging 17.5 points, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks per game, while shooting 52 percent, in the Petrels' weekend sweep over Rhodes and Hendrix Jan. 20 and 22, respectively.
