Petrels Rout Rust, Sweep Doubleheader

The Oglethorpe baseball team destroyed Rust in a doubleheader Saturday, winning the first game, 15-0, and the second game, 25-0. Emmett Goodman picked up the winin Game 1 for the Petrels, and Josh Morgan did so in the second game.

In Game 1, the Petrels scored three runs in the first inning, five in the fourth, and seven in the sixth. In the first, RBI doubles by Nick Manai and Cory Leff brought in the first two runs, then Casey Tuttle followed with a sacrifice fly.

In the fourth, the big blow was a bases-loaded RBI single by Manai that wound up bringing all four runs in after a Rust error.

Then in the sixth, Jeff Brothers hit a two-run double, Joe Parillo and Frank Sarno lifted sacrifice flies, Ryan Grau hit an RBI single and Vernon Trice rounded out the scoring with a two-run single.

Emmett Goodman pitched brilliantly, going six innings, striking out 10 and allowing just one hit.

In Game 2, the Petrels exploded for an 18-run third inning that provided most of their scoring in the 25-0 win. The Petrels sent 24 men to the plate in the inning, going through their entire order over two-and-a-half times. TJ Schmutz went 3-for-3 in the marathon inning. Among the run-scoring hits in the inning were a two-run double by Joey McAlpin, a two-run single by Sarno, a two-run single by Schmutz, an RBI double by Will Hanna, an RBI single by Trice, an RBI single by McAlpin, an RBI single by Anthony Amato, an RBI single by Jayce Owen, an RBI single by Sarno, an RBI single by Hunter Riley, an RBI single by Schmutz and, last but not least, an RBI single by pitcher David Langhan.

McAlpin went 3-for-4 with five RBIs in the game overall. Josh Morgan started the game for the Petrels and picked up the victory.

The Petrels will next be in action tomorrow from Holly Springs, Miss., as they will complete their three-game series at Rust. First pitch will be at approximately 1 p.m.
