The Oglethorpe baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Rust on Sunday, blowing out the home-standing Bearcats, 23-0. Add that to the 15-0 and 25-0 victories on Saturday and the Petrels outscored Rust 63-0 over the weekend, and outhit them 53-4.
The Petrels came right out of the gate with their second 18-run inning in as many games. They scored 18 runs on 16 hits in the first inning. Twenty-two men came to the plate over the course of the inning. Nick Manai was 3-for-3 with six RBIs and three runs scored in the inning. Big hits in the inning included an RBI single, a two-run single and a three-run double by Manai; two RBI singles by Joe Parillo; an RBI triple by Joey McAlpin; an RBI single by Ryan Grau; an RBI double by Jake Spear; an RBI triple and an RBI double by Cory Leff; an RBI triple by Josh Morgan; an RBI single by Hunter Riley; and an RBI single by Vernon Trice.
The Petrels then scored five more runs on three more hits in the fifth. RBI singles by Jayce Owen and Parillo proved to be the big hits in the inning. Morgan added a sacrifice fly.
Cody Campbell picked up the win for Oglethorpe, the first of his collegiate career.
With the win, the Petrels improve to 5-6 on the season. They will next be in action late Tuesday afternoon. They will host Huntingdon at 4 p.m.
