The Oglethorpe baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Rhodes on Friday, losing the first game 2-1 and losing the second game 8-3.
In Game 1, the Petrels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Center fielder Vernon Trice was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. He was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Jake Spear and a flyout by pitcher Cory Leff. Catcher Joe Parillo then stepped to the plate and drove Trice in with his first triple of the year.
However, the Petrels would get no more for the rest of the game. Rhodes scored single runs in the first and second, but that was all they needed for the 2-1 victory.
Leff suffered the loss, dropping him to 0-5 on the season. He pitched pretty well, though, throwing a complete game, allowing just two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out three.
In Game 2, Rhodes put the game away early. They scored four in the first inning en route to a 7-0 lead after four innings.
Oglethorpe did score three in the fifth, clawing their way back to a 7-3 scoreline. Left fielder Nick Manai led off the inning with an infield single. Then with one out, first baseman Casey Tuttle singled, putting two runners on. After a fielder's choice put runners at the corners with two outs, back-to-back singles by center fielder Vernon Trice and second baseman Jake Spear scored both runs and Trice, with the help of a Rhodes error.
That was all the Petrels would get, however. Rhodes added an insurance run in the eighth to reach the final 8-3 scoreline.
David Langhan started the game and suffered the loss for the Petrels, dropping to 2-3 on the year. He pitched four innings, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. He walked three and struck out two.
The losses drop the Petrels to 8-19 on the season, 2-6 in SCAC play. They will try to salvage a game from this three-game set at Rhodes on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
