Baseball Swept at Birmingham-Southern, Lose Final Game 12-6

The Oglethorpe baseball team was swept at Birmingham-Southern over the weekend, including a 12-6 defeat to close the series out on Sunday.

After a couple of close games to start the series, the home-standing Panthers came out and put the game away early today. They scored a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead, then scored a run in the third and four runs in the fourth, extending their lead to 6-0.

Birmingham-Southern continued pouring it on with a run in the seventh and five more in the eighth. With a 12-0 deficit entering the ninth, the game was pretty much over at that point. However, the Petrels came up with a significant rally in the ninth, largely on the backs of players off the bench.

Pinch-hitter Justin Thigpen walked to lead off the inning, then advanced to second on a balk and third on a wild pitch. After a Petrel out, pinch-hitter Alex Atteberry walked, as did designated hitter Jake Purcell. That set the table for two-run doubles by shortstop Billy Mayberry and Thigpen, as well as an RBI single by catcher Jeff Brothers and an RBI walk by second baseman Frankie Vascimini. The rally ended there, though, and the Panthers came away with a 12-6 win.

Starting pitcher Kyle Mitchell suffered the loss and had a tough outing, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits over three-and-two-thirds innings. Brothers went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, an RBI, and a run. Second baseman Keith Dearden and left fielder Casey Innis also posted 2-for-3 afternoons.

The loss drops the Petrels to 2-13 on the season, 1-5 in SAA play. They will travel to Augusta, Ga., Tuesday to take on Paine in an afternoon doubleheader. Next weekend, they go up to Rome, Ga., to play Berry in their next SAA series.
