Baseball Drops Second Game to Birmingham-Southern, 3-1
The Oglethorpe baseball team fell to 0-2 on their three-game road series with Birmingham-Southern Saturday, falling in Birmingham, Ala., 3-1.
The Petrels took an early lead for the second day in a row with a run in the third inning. Second baseman Will Hanna started with a leadoff single up the middle, and was moved over to third by consecutive groundouts. Then, right fielder Nick Manai walked and stole second. Designated hitter Jeff Brothers came through with an RBI single that scored Hanna, but not Manai. Manai would be left on-base to end the inning, and it would be the only run that Oglethorpe would score
The home-standing Panthers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, then took the lead with another run in the fourth.
The Petrels put the go-ahead runs on first and second with one out in the eighth after a single by Manai and a walk by Brothers, but a popout and a strikeout ended the Petrel threat.
Birmingham-Southern added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning, and Oglethorpe didn't seriously threaten in the ninth.
Oglethorpe starter Emmett Goodman suffered the tough-luck loss, pitching well over six innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits. He did walk six Panthers, but struck out five. He drops to 0-4 on the season.
The Petrels managed only three hits against BSC pitching. Manai and Brothers were each 1-for-2 with two walks. Manai stole a base and Brothers drove in a run.
The loss drops the squad to 2-12, 1-4 in SAA play. They complete the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. Eastern, when they'll try to salvage a game out of the set.
