  • Baseball Earns NCAA Division III Statistical Championship in Home Runs per Game
    July 14, 2017
    The Oglethorpe baseball team earned its first-ever NCAA Division III statistical championship by either the team or an individual over the course of the 2017 season, finishing first in the nation in home runs per game with 1.18. That mark edged them just 0.02 home runs per game ahead of Worcester Polytechnic Institute for the statistical title. The mark also serves as a school record for the Stormy Petrels.
  • Sixty-Six Stormy Petrels Named to 2016-17 SAA Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll

    The Oglethorpe athletic department saw 66 student-athletes named to the SAA Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll for the 2016-17 winter and spring seasons Friday. The 66 Oglethorpe student-athletes joined a total of 1,033 from around the SAA to earn a spot on the Academic Honor Roll.

    The SAA released their Spring All-Sportsmanship Teams Tuesday, recognizing student-athletes who displayed outstanding sportsmanship over the course of their seasons. The nine Stormy Petrels join a total of 79 student-athletes among the conference's eight full-time members across its 10 sponsored spring sports.

    The Oglethorpe athletic department rounded out the season with the Fifth Annual Petey Awards on Sunday, hosted at the Turner Lynch Campus Center on Oglethorpe's campus. The event, which is produced by the Oglethorpe Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), allowed Oglethorpe student-athletes to honor the best and brightest performances of the year while reflecting on the 2016-17 athletic year as a whole.
  • Baseball Sees Season Come to Close with SAA Tournament Loss to Millsaps

    The Oglethorpe baseball team saw their season draw to a close Saturday afternoon with an 8-inning, 14-4 loss to the Millsaps Majors in an SAA Tournament elimination game at Stauffer Field in Memphis, Tennessee. The Stormy Petrels fell behind 3-0 early and surrendered runs in every inning except the second. The loss means that Oglethorpe ends the season with an 18-22 overall mark.
  • Baseball Puts Seven Players on All-SAA Teams

    The Oglethorpe baseball team saw seven players earn All-SAA recognition from the league's coaches Friday. The Stormy Petrels put senior catcher Adrian Celata and sophomore first baseman Andrew Mink on the All-SAA First Team; senior third baseman Austin Ferlita, senior outfielder Brandon Fish and junior designated hitter Bobby Rezac on the All-SAA Second Team; and junior second baseman Matt Motz and sophomore pitcher Kyle Babb on the All-SAA Honorable Mention list. It marked the first time earning All-SAA recognition for Rezac, Motz and Babb. It also represented new high-water marks for Ferlita and Mink, who previously topped out at honorable mention and second team, respectively.
  • Baseball to Get SAA Tournament Started Friday

    The Oglethorpe baseball team will travel to Memphis, Tennessee, this weekend for the first rounds of the SAA Tournament. The Stormy Petrels hold the No. 7 seed in the event, and are involved in a 4-team double-elimination pod with No. 2 seed Rhodes, No. 3 seed Hendrix and No. 6 seed Millsaps. The Petrels will take on hosts Rhodes in their opening contest at noon Eastern time on Friday.
  • Baseball Falls to Host Rhodes in SAA Tournament Opener

    The Oglethorpe baseball team got their stay at the SAA Tournament in Memphis, Tennessee, off to a rocky start Friday afternoon, falling behind to the No. 2 seed Rhodes Lynx 8-0 after five innings and eventually dropping the contest 10-4. The defeat dropped the Stormy Petrels to 18-21 on the season and forces them to play an elimination game against the loser of Friday's second game between No. 3 seed Hendrix and No. 6 seed Millsaps.
  • Sunday Baseball Game Canceled Due to Rain

    The Oglethorpe baseball team`s game versus against the Hendrix Warriors, originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, has been canceled due to rain and will not be made up. The Stormy Petrels finish the regular season at 18-20 overall and 7-13 in SAA play, and will now get set to head to the SAA Tournament next weekend.
  • Baseball Swept by Hendrix in Doubleheader

    The Oglethorpe baseball team endured a tough day on the field Saturday, as they fell in a pair of games to the visiting Hendrix Warriors at Anderson Field, falling 14-3 in seven innings in Game 1 and 10-8 in eight innings in Game 2. The losses dropped the Stormy Petrels to 18-20 on the season overall and 7-13 in SAA play.
  • Baseball Hangs On for 12-9 Win at Piedmont
    April 19, 2017
    The Oglethorpe baseball team swung the bats well Wednesday night in Demorest, and rode that offensive output to a 12-9 win over the homestanding Piedmont Lions at Loudermilk Field, improving the team to 18-18 on the season. The Stormy Petrels jumped out to a huge lead over the Lions, enjoying a 7-0 advantage after five innings and extending that to 12-0 in the eighth. Piedmont mounted a considerable rally in the ninth inning, scoring 9 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks, but the Petrels were able to hold on for the 3-run victory.
  • Baseball's Late Comeback Attempt Falls Short, Petrels Lose 5-3
    April 18, 2017
    The Oglethorpe baseball team fell behind early and had difficulty getting runs across against Tuesday evening against Huntingdon in Montgomery, Alabama. They rallied for 3 runs in the ninth inning, but ended the game with the potential tying run at the plate in a 5-3 defeat to the homestanding Hawks. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 17-18 on the season.
  • Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Berry
    April 15, 2017
    The Oglethorpe baseball team earned a doubleheader split from the homestanding Berry Vikings in Mount Berry Saturday afternoon, defeating their opponent 10-9 in the opener and falling 14-5 in the night cap. The results moved the Stormy Petrels 17-17 on the season overall and 7-11 in SAA play.
  • Baseball Falls in Series Opener at Berry, 8-2

    The Oglethorpe baseball team ran into some good pitching Friday evening in Mount Berry and couldn't overcome it in an 8-2 defeat at the hands of the Berry Vikings. The Stormy Petrels were held scoreless through the opening eight innings on Friday. They tallied their two runs in the eighth, but the Vikings were able to put the game away in the bottom half of the inning. The result dropped the Petrels to 16-16 on the year overall and 6-10 in SAA play.
  • Ten-Run Inning Leads Crosstown Rival Emory to Victory over Baseball
    April 11, 2017
    The Oglethorpe baseball team had a rough go of it Tuesday evening against their crosstown rivals, the Emory Eagles. The visiting team scored 10 runs in the third inning, giving themselves an 8-run lead at that point en route to a 19-3 blowout of the Stormy Petrels. The loss dropped the Petrels to 16-15 on the season overall.
  • Baseball Suffers Third Straight Walk-Off Defeat at Millsaps

    The Oglethorpe baseball team's rough weekend in Jackson, Mississippi, continued Sunday, as they lost a 6-5 lead in the ninth inning en route to a 7-6 defeat to the homestanding Millsaps Majors. Millsaps used a 2-run walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth for their third consecutive last at-bat win over the Stormy Petrels on the weekend. The loss dropped the Petrels to 16-14 on the season overall and 6-9 in SAA play, moving them to a tie for sixth in the league with Berry.
  • Baseball Suffers Pair of Heartbreaking Losses in Doubleheader Sweep

    The Oglethorpe baseball team had a rough go of it Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi, falling to the homestanding Millsaps Majors in a pair of games that the Stormy Petrels led in the late innings. They had a 9-4 leading in the sixth inning of Game 1 before allowing 6 ninth-inning runs, including a walk-off grand slam, to fall 13-9. Then, they led 3-2 into the sixth inning of Game 2, but allowed a run in each of the final two frames (of the 7-inning game) to fall 4-3. The losses dropped the Petrels to 16-13 overall and 6-8 in SAA play.
  • Tuesday Baseball Game at LaGrange Scrapped Due to Wet Grounds

    The Oglethorpe baseball team's Tuesday evening contest on the road at No. 3 LaGrange has been postponed due to wet grounds from Monday's heavy rainfall. No makeup date has been announced for the contest.
  • Adrian Celata Takes Second Career SAA Baseball Player of the Week Honor; Breaks School Career Home Run Record

    Junior catcher Adrian Celata of the Oglethorpe baseball team had his best week of the season so far, helping the Stormy Petrels to five consecutive wins over Huntingdon, Piedmont and Centre. He earned his second career SAA Baseball Player of the Week award from the league office Monday for his efforts. In addition, his 3-run home run during the comeback in Wednesday's 20-16 victory over Piedmont allowed him to pass Brendan Pilger for the Oglethorpe career home run lead with 23.
  • Baseball Comes Back from Four Runs Down to Defeat Centre, Earns Series Sweep

    The Oglethorpe baseball team completed a series sweep over the Centre Colonels Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field, coming back from four runs down to take the lead in the eighth inning and win 10-9. The victory improved the Petrels to 16-11 on the season overall and 6-6 in SAA play.
  • Baseball Sweeps SAA Doubleheader from Centre

    The Oglethorpe baseball team enjoyed an excellent start to their 3-game series with the visiting Centre Colonels on Saturday, as they swept a doubleheader from their SAA foe. The Stormy Petrels emerged victorious 9-2 in the first game, then blanked Centre 8-0 in the second. The wins improved the team to 15-11 on the season overall and 5-6 in SAA play.
  • Baseball Storms Back from 9-Run Deficit to Upend Piedmont, 20-16, in Wild Game
    March 29, 2017
    The Oglethorpe baseball team found themselves behind 12-3 in the middle of the fourth inning Wednesday night at Anderson Field. They didn't give up, though. On the contrary, they emphatically fought back, outscoring the visiting Piedmont Lions 17-4 the rest of the way en route to a wild 20-16 victory which improved the Stormy Petrels to 13-11 on the season.
  • Baseball Uses Pair of Eighth-Inning Runs to Knock off Huntingdon, 4-2

    The Oglethorpe baseball team found themselves locked in a pitcher's duel of sorts with the visiting Huntingdon Hawks Tuesday night at Anderson Field, but found a way to emerge with a 4-2 victory. The win moved the Stormy Petrels over .500 at 12-11 on the season, and served as their fifth win in their last six contests, as well as their third in a row.
  • Andrew Mink Earns SAA Baseball Player of the Week Honors

    Oglethorpe sophomore first baseman Andrew Mink had his second consecutive outstanding week since returning from an early-season injury, and earned SAA Baseball Player of the Week Monday from the league's office for his efforts. He became the second Stormy Petrel this season to earn such an honor, and the third to take an SAA weekly award of any type.
  • Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader over Sewanee with Offensive Explosion
    March 25, 2017
    The Oglethorpe baseball team swept a doubleheader from the visiting Sewanee Tigers Saturday afternoon in Tennessee, allowing them to take two of three from the Tigers for the series. The Stormy Petrels fell behind 6-2 in the third inning of Game 1, but outscored Sewanee 10-1 over the remainder of the contest and 24-2 over the remainder of the afternoon for a pair of huge SAA victories. The wins improved the Petrels to 11-11 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
  • Late-Inning Sewanee Comeback Derails Baseball, 4-3

    The Oglethorpe baseball team took a 3-2 lead over the Sewanee Tigers into the bottom of the eighth inning Friday evening in Sewanee, Tennessee, but the home team was able to score a run in each of the final two frames and turn things around for a 4-3 victory. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 9-11 on the season overall and 1-6 in SAA play.
  • Oglethorpe Athletics to Celebrate Start of Division III Week with Cookout on Sunday, April 2

    The Oglethorpe athletic department will celebrate the start of NCAA Division III Week on Sunday, April 2, with a cookout that will be ongoing during the baseball game against Centre and the men's lacrosse game against Hendrix that afternoon. The cookout will take place from noon to 3 p.m., and will be held at Petey's Party Pavilion, the landing overlooking right field at Anderson Field.
  • Schedule Changes to Weekend Baseball Series at Sewanee
    March 23, 2017
    The 3-game set in Tennessee between the Oglethorpe baseball team and Sewanee has been shifted around due to potential stormy weather over the weekend. The single game between the two teams, originally scheduled for 1 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, will now be moved to 4 p.m. on Friday. The two teams will try to play Saturday's doubleheader as scheduled, but if the rain postpones one or both of the games, they will be made up on Sunday at a time to be determined.
  • Baseball Wins Slugfest at Covenant, 11-8
    March 21, 2017
    The Oglethorpe baseball team took its second consecutive high-scoring victory Tuesday afternoon on Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia, defeating the homestanding Covenant Scots 11-8 in game. After trailing by three runs early in the contest, Covenant fought back with three runs in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. However, the Stormy Petrels responded with three runs of their own in the seventh to build a lead which they they would not relinquish, and secure their third win in their last four contests. The victory improved the team to 9-10 on the season.
