Senior infielder Austin Ferlita of the Oglethorpe baseball team was named SAA Baseball Player of the Week Monday by the league's office, marking the first time in his career that he has earned the honor. Ferlita was instrumental in the team's victory over Huntingdon Saturday as part of the Firehouse Classic in Montgomery, Alabama, while also performing well in a pair of losses at the same event.
Ferlita played very well in the team's opening weekend of action at the Firehouse Classic, batting .500 over the course of the three games with 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, 5 runs scored, 2 stolen bases and a walk. He slugged .929 for the weekend and sported a .533 on-base percentage. His .500 batting average places him second in the league at this very early point in the season, and his .929 slugging percentage ranks him first.
"I'm happy for Austin," said Oglethorpe head coach Dan Giordano. "He has put in a ton of work to get ready for the season. He's our leader on and off the field. He had some really good at-bats this weekend. I know he will continue to put in the work and keep improving his game."
Ferlita and the rest of the Stormy Petrels will now return to Anderson Field for their home opener Wednesday evening against Covenant at 5 p.m. After that, they'll host Curry for a 3-game series over the weekend.
