Senior third baseman Austin Ferlita of the Oglethorpe baseball team has been named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, the first such honor of his career. He becomes the first member of the Stormy Petrel baseball program to earn the accolade since Joey McAlpin in April of 2015.
Ferlita played very well in the team's opening weekend of action at the Firehouse Classic in Montgomery, Alabama, batting .500 over the course of the three games with 2 home runs, 6 RBIs, 5 runs scored, 2 stolen bases and a walk. He slugged .929 for the weekend and sported a .533 on-base percentage. His .500 batting average places him second in the league at this very early point in the season, and his .929 slugging percentage ranks him first. His efforts helped in a 13-3, seven-inning win over Huntingdon on Saturday, and in scoring 16 combined runs in a pair of losses to Southwestern (Texas) and LaGrange in the other two games.
The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its sixth season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the first Team of the Week of the 2017 season.
Ferlita and the rest of the Stormy Petrels will now return to Anderson Field for their home opener Saturday afternoon against Curry at 1 p.m. as part of a doubleheader that day. Curry will remain in Atlanta to complete the 3-game series on Sunday.
