Baseball Puts Two on All-Region Squads

The Oglethorpe baseball team saw two of its players earn spots on All-Region squads this week. Junior first baseman Andrew Mink was named to the D3baseball.com All-South Region First Team and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-South Region Second Team, while senior designated hitter Adrian Celata garnered a spot on the D3baseball.com All-South Region Third Team.

Mink earned his first career All-Region honors, which served as an excellent cap to his outstanding junior season. He also won his third consecutive spot on an All-SAA team, and his second straight All-SAA First Team slot, in late April. He finished the season atop the SAA leaderboard in all three slash line categories, holding a .462 batting average, a .538 on-base percentage and a .727 slugging percentage. With the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship ongoing, Mink is currently eighth in the nation in batting average, ninth in on-base percentage and 18th in slugging percentage. He earned SAA Player of the Week and D3baseball.com Team of the Week honors the week of March 26 after going 8-for-10 with eight RBIs in a series win over Sewanee, and took SAA Player of the Week and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Hitter of the Week Honorable Mention the week of Feb. 26 after going 11-for-18 over four games the week before, including helping his team win two from eventual SAA regular season champion Berry.

Celata earned a spot on an All-Region team for the second time in his career, after taking home All-South First Team honors from both D3baseball.com and the ABCA after the 2016 season. In 2018, he earned his fourth career All-SAA accolade and his third career All-SAA First Team honor. He finished the season tops in the SAA in home runs (10), and is tied for second in walks (33). Nationally, he ranks 25th in home runs. He was named the SAA Player of the Week on Feb. 19 after going 4-for-10 with a home run, a double, six walks, seven RBIs and six runs scored in a pair of victories over MacMurray the previous weekend. Celata finishes his career having destroyed several Oglethorpe career records. He set the career home run record of 38, besting Brendan Pilger's previous mark of 22; he set the total bases record of 355, besting the previous mark of 311 set by Oglethorpe Hall of Famer Tim Ernst; and he set the RBI record at 144, besting the previous mark of 119 set by Oglethorpe Hall of Famer Josh Gazaway.

"These are well-deserved honors," said Oglethorpe head coach Dan Giordano. "I'm happy to see Mink get first team honors in D3baseball.com and All-Region honors in both, as he was one of the best players in the conference over the course of the year. This also serves as a great capper to an outstanding career for Celata."

The 2018 season marks the seventh year that D3baseball.com has named All-Region teams, with 800 players nominated. The ballot was then made available to sports information directors, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region, as well as D3baseball.com staff and contributors. Players were nominated for All-Region inclusion by the SIDs at the various schools.

The ABCA teams are voted on by members of the organization and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Division III All-America Committee. The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 9,600 members represent all 50 states and 25 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Divisions I, II and III; NAIA; junior college; Pacific Association Division (a group of junior colleges located in Pacific coast states); high school; and youth.
