Men Handle Sewanee on Homecoming Night

The Oglethorpe University men's basketball team defeated the Sewanee Tigers on Pinholster Court on Saturday night, 84-71. The Petrels opened up a double-digit lead less than four minutes into the contest and cruised to the victory from there.

Oglethorpe started the game on a 12-2 run and the Tigers got no closer the rest of the way. The Petrels eventually broke open a 22 point advantage on two separate occasions in the second half and had no trouble dispatching the woebegone 4-21 Tiger squad.

Oglethorpe celebrated Senior Day and all four of them got into the act on Saturday night. David Allison and Wade Weldon each started and were Oglethorpe's two leading scorers on the night with 17 points and 15 points respectively. Eddie Buckley finished his career off by going 4 of 4 at the free throw line for 4 points, 2 steals and a rebound. Carlos Carthen dressed out for the first time and checked in and played the final 24 seconds for Oglethorpe in a fitting homecoming celebration that ended victorious.

Alex Richey drilled 5 of 10 shots for 14 points and Erik Strong continued to enjoy his starting role by posting 11 points and a team-high 9 rebounds. Joe Kennedy added 7 points and a team-high 6 assists. Todd Ward scored 6 points, and, with 6 rebounds, eclipsed the 600 rebound mark for a career. With 9 more points Ward will become only the 13th player in SCAC history with over 1,000 points and 600 rebounds. Not bad for a player that is still listed as a junior on the roster.

The Petrels finish the regular season with a 15-10 overall record including 9-7 in SCAC play. Oglethorpe will compete in the SCAc Men's Basketball Championship next Friday-Sunday in Jackson, Mississippi. The Petrels enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed in the East and will more than likely square off with the No. 2 seed from the West, Trinity University. Quarterfinal action is set for 3:00 p.m. Central next Friday in Jackson. The live audio call will be available at
