The men's basketball team lost to Maryville College in Tennessee on Saturday night, 94-66. The Scots jumped on the Petrels with a 19-2 spurt early in the first half from which Oglethorpe could not recover en route to the loss.
The Scots began their decisive run with 15:33 to play in the first half with Oglethorpe clinging to an 8-7 advantage. By the end of the run the score was 26-10 in Maryville's favor with 10:11 to play and Oglethorpe had to scrap just to hang around.
The Petrels did manage to whittle the advantage down to 7 points with 3:16 to play in the half following a three-ball from Alec Pitts, but Maryville pushed the margin back up to 14 at the break with a late spurt that deflated Oglethorpe. The Scots wound up achieving a 20 point lead early in the second stanza and held the Petrels at bay from that point forward.
The Petrels shot 41% from the field in the contest but got outrebounded by a substantial 48-26 margin. Sam Purdy scored 10 points for Oglethorpe and was the only Petrel in double-figures.
With the loss Oglethorpe falls to 1-3 on the season. Oglethorpe will square off with LaGrange College at Maryville at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
