The men's basketball team lost to Centre College in Danville, Ky. on Sunday evening, 65-55. The Petrels fell behind by 15 points in the first half but rallied all the way back to take a lead with less than 6 minutes to play, but the Colonels closed the game with an 18-7 scoring run to claim the conference win.
The Petrels came out flat and watched the Colonels build a 22-7 lead over the game's first 9 minutes. Consecutive hoops from Christian Molinet followed by back-to-back three's from Branden Jovaag got the Petrels going, however, and Oglethorpe headed into the break trailing 30-23 after weathering 6 first half three-pointers from the Colonels.
The momentum carried over into the second half as Sam Purdy knocked down a trey to start the stanza and the Petrels had tied the contest at 32 apiece at the 16:05 mark following a layup from Alec Pitts. The lead would go on to change hands 5 times down the stretch between the two teams until a Pitts hoop with 5:41 left gave Oglethorpe a 48-47 lead. But the Colonels marched on to score 15 of the next 19 points to seal the win.
The Colonels helped themselves by making all 15 of their free throw attempts while only allowing Oglethorpe to attempt 5 on the afternoon. The Petrels held a slight 28-26 rebounding edge and made 2 more field goals than Centre but the Colonels held the edge from long range, making 10 triples.
Jovaag was 4-of-5 from downtown on the afternoon for 13 points to lead the Petrels. Molinet tallied 12 points and Andrew Steioff posted 10 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.
Oglethorpe is now 4-7 (0-3) on the season and will be off until a January 3rd tilt on Pinholster Court at 7:00 p.m. against Berry College.
