The men's basketball team lost to Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas on Friday night, 76-54. The Petrels never led and trailed by double-digits for most of the night as another conference rival enjoyed a hot shooting night.
The Petrels had to feel a touch of deja vu as, eerily similar to last Friday night in Atlanta, their opponent came out with a red-hot first half shooting the ball. A week ago it was Rhodes College knocking down everything en route to a remarkable 90% shooting from the field in the first half. Tonight the Tigers had similar success, draining 15-of-25 (60%) attempts to open up a 38-27 lead at the break.
Oglethorpe trimmed the Tigers advantage down to single digits (49-40) on a hoop by Alec Pitts with 11:43 to play in the game, but Trinity scored 20 seconds later to push their lead back above 10 points. The Petrels were never able to get any closer as the Tigers eventually opened up a 23 point lead before settling on the final margin.
Trinity went on to shoot 55% from the field for the game including making 7-of-15 (47%) from beyond the arc. They also dominated the Petrels in transition, outscoring OU 20-2 in fast break points.
Alec Pitts and Andrew Steioff led the offense for Oglethorpe in the loss. The duo combined to make 10-of-21 shots as Pitts tallied 11 and Steioff, who grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds, added 10 points.
Oglethorpe is now 6-9 (1-5) on the season and will face Southwestern on Saturday night in Georgetown, Texas at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. Check gopetrels.com to follow the game using live stats.
