Men Squander Early Lead; Late Rally Comes Up Short

The men's basketball team had their three-game winning streak snapped in Conway, Ark. on Friday night as they lost to Hendrix 80-73. The Petrels led by 10 with 5 minutes to play in the first half before going cold. Down 11 with 2:30 remaining in the game, they fought back to cut it to three before ultimately falling on the road.

The Petrels trailed 13-12 early on before using a 17-4 spurt to open up a 29-17 lead to play in the first half. The run was a team effort as 5 different players combined to tally the 17 points. When freshman Jordan Kinney scored with 4:20 remaining in the stanza the Petrels led 35-25, but those would be the final OU points of the half as the Warriors rallied to make it 35-33 at the break.

The second half featured multiple lead changes before Hendrix seized control late. Following a Christian Molinet hoop the score was 59-56 Hendrix with 6:56 to play. The Warriors took command by churning out a 14-6 run over the next four minutes to open up a 73-62 cushion with just 2:30 left. The Petrels fought furiously to cut the lead to down to 76-73 with 26 ticks showing but the Warriors closed strong at the line to seal the win.

Both squads made 29 field goals in the contest but Hendrix held the edge from long range, drilling 11-of-23 from downtown. While still shooting it well, Oglethorpe made 6-of-13 (46%) from distance

Andrew Steioff and Christian Molinet each had 17 points to lead Oglethorpe on the night. Steioff had a team-high 8 rebounds and Molinet dished a team-high 6 assists. Alec Pitts rounded out the Petrels in double figures with 11 points. Oglethorpe is now 9-10 on the season and will face Colorado College on the road this Sunday afternoon.
