The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference announced its postseason basketball award winners on Saturday night and Oglethorpe stars Andrew Steioff and Alec Pitts received recognition. Steioff, a senior from Duluth, Ga., was named to the All-SCAC Third Team while Pitts, a junior from Mobile, Ala., collected Honorable Mention status.
Steioff enjoyed a breakout senior season for the Petrels in which he led the team in scoring and rebounding. He collected 58 points in the exclusive voting held by the SCAC coaches towards postseason honors and just narrowly missed being a Second Team selection. Steioff was the league's 5th leading scorer at 14.4 points per game and checked in at 5th place as well in rebounding with 7.4 boards per game. Additionally, Steioff led the league in both field goal shooting percentage (.531) and blocked shots (1.7 per game).
The All-SCAC Honorable Mention nod for Pitts is his second consecutive after piecing together another fine season for coach Ponder. Pitts was the Petrels second-leading scorer at 11.9 points per game, good for 17th best in the conference. His 1.8 steals per game average ranked second in the league and his 2.7 assists per game average ranked him 12th overall in that category. Though he did not have enough attempts to qualify amongst the league-leaders, Pitts made 47-of-51 free throw attempts in 2011-12, good for a sparkling 92.2% success rate.
