The Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (GABCA) announced the 2011-12 All-State Award recipients on Wednesday and Oglethorpe senior center Andrew Steioff highlighted a group of five Petrels to receive recognition.
Steioff earned GABCA All-State First Team honors after enjoying a breakout senior season in which he led the Petrels in both scoring and rebounding and was one of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's (SCAC) most consistent performers. He was the SCAC's 5th leading scorer at 14.4 points per game and checked in at 5th place as well in rebounding with 7.4 boards per game. Additionally, Steioff led the league in both field goal shooting percentage (.531) and blocked shots (1.7 per game) as he was named Third Team All-Conference.
Junior guard Alec Pitts earned GABCA All-State honorable Mention status after piecing together another fine season for Coach Ponder. Pitts was the Petrels second-leading scorer at 11.9 points per game, good for 17th best in the SCAC. His 1.8 steals per game average ranked second in the league and his 2.7 assists per game average ranked him 12th overall in that category. Though he did not have enough attempts to qualify amongst the league-leaders, Pitts made 47-of-51 free throw attempts in 2011-12, good for a sparkling 92.2% success rate. He also collected All-SCAC Honorable Mention honors for his outstanding season.
Oglethorpe also had three players recognized for their excellent work in the classroom as junior Branden Jovaag, freshman Jordan Kinney and junior Sam Purdy each collected GABCA All-Academic awards. In order for student-athletes to be eligible for this honor they must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
