The Oglethorpe men's basketball team improved to 7-2 on the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Boyce in the Lon Varnell Classic, 97-68, ensuring themselves of a 2-0 run through the weekend event in Sewanee, Tenn.
After falling behind 4-2 very early on, the Petrels ripped off 19 straight points over the next 5:20 to take a 21-4 lead. Then, they finished the half from that point outscoring Boyce 32-21. Consequently, the Petrels took a commanding 53-25 lead into the locker room with them.
The second half was a matter of maintaining the status quo, as the two teams traded baskets for most of the half. The game had already been decided in the first, and the Petrels cruised to an easy 29-point win.
Oglethorpe shot 54 percent from the floor for the game, contrasted with Boyce's 40 percent mark. Both teams shot well from the three-point line, Oglethorpe shooting 39 percent to Boyce's 36. The Petrels outscored Boyce 40-20 in the paint, 39-7 off turnovers and 36-9 off the bench. Oglethorpe outrebounded Boyce 41-30 and forced 24 turnovers.
Oglethorpe had five players in double figures, including center Jordan Kinney, who scored 15 points on the day off of 70 percent shooting. Guard Branden Jovaag scored a team-high 19 points on 50 percent shooting, including five made three-pointers. Forward Tyler Courson also shot 50 percent, scoring 12 points and grabbing six rebounds. Guard Alex Davis poured in 12 on 5-of-7 shooting, and added six assists, to boot.
The 7-2 Petrels will take this coming week off for exams and will return after the start of the holiday break. They will travel to Dayotona Beach, Fla., starting December 20 to take part in the Daytona Beach Shootout. They will play Roanoke at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20.
