The Oglethorpe men's basketball team defeated Dallas Saturday night, 77-64, in their final non-conference contest before delving into SAA play in earnest next weekend.
The Petrels jumped out to a quick lead in this one and expanded it with a 15-6 run midway through the first half. With 7:33 remaining in the half, the Petrels led 25-14. Dallas would cut the lead to five, but the Petrels went on another run to end the half, this one a 9-0 run, and led 37-23 at the break.
The second half started as more of the same, with the Petrels going on an 8-4 run to start the half and increase the margin to 18 points, the largest one of the game. The visiting Crusaders worked their deficit down to nine points with a 10-1 run of their own, making the score 46-37 with 13:47 remaining in the game.
The Petrels worked the lead back to 14 points, 56-42, on a 3-pointer by senior guard Alec Pitts with 10:50 left in the game. Dallas then embarked on another mini-run, this time cutting the lead to eight points, 62-54, with 5:34 left. It was the closest they would ever get.
The Petrels pushed the lead back out to 14 points with a minute to go and cruised home from there for the 77-64 win.
The Petrels shot 51 percent for the game, easily topping Dallas' 36 percent mark. Oglethorpe also shot 39 percent from beyond the arc to the Crusaders' 30 percent. They outrebounded Dallas 38-30 and outscored them in the paint 32-22.
Senior guard Christian Molinet led all Petrels with 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and five assists. Senior center Jordan Kinney was dominant down low in the second half, finishing with 13 points and seven rebounds, nine and five in the second half, respectively. Pitts also had a huge second half, scoring 13 points for the game, 12 for the half.
The 9-3 Petrels now enter the meat of the SAA schedule. They will host Hendrix on Friday at 8 p.m., then Rhodes will come into town on Sunday at 3 p.m.
