The Oglethorpe men's basketball team blew out the home-standing Berry Vikings Saturday night in Mount Berry, Ga., racking up a 79-52 victory. The win improves the Petrels to 11-4 on the season, 3-1 in SAA competition.
The Petrels more or less ran Berry out of the building from start-to-finish. The Vikings never led and, after a 6-6 tie with 16 minutes remaining in the first half, the Petrels never trailed. With 8:50 remaining in the first half, the Petrels led by just three, but from that point, they went on an 18-2 run to take a 19-point lead. At halftime, the Stormy Petrels led 38-27.
In the second half, the Petrels quickly put the game to bed, going on a 17-5 run over the first five minutes of the half to take a 55-32 lead. The Petrels used a 13-1 run later in the half to take their largest lead of the game, a 29-point advantage, 72-43, with 4:45 remaining in the contest. From there, the Petrels easily saw the game out, eventually winning by a 27-point margin.
The Petrels shot a sizzling 55 percent from the field for the game, easily besting Berry's 41 percent mark. The Petrels also shot 35 percent from three-point range. Senior center Jordan Kinney led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-8 shooting and 4-of-5 free throw shooting. He nearly tallied a double-double, grabbing nine rebounds, as well. Senior guard Christian Molinet had another good performance, scoring 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting and 5-of-5 free throw shooting, dishing seven assists and swiping six steals.
The Petrels will next take the floor on Friday, when they travel to Danville, Ky., to take on Centre at approximately 8 p.m.
