Men's Basketball Trounces Sewanee, 78-62
The Oglethorpe men's basketball team led Sewanee wire-to-wire on Sunday afternoon, defeating them 78-62 in Sewanee, Tenn. The win improves the Petrels to 12-5 on the season, 4-2 in SAA play. They maintain their position in fourth place in the league.
The Petrels started the game on a 19-0 run over the first 7:30, putting them in control right off the bat. Sewanee scored seven straight points after that, but the Petrels answered with six straight of their own to take a 25-7 lead. The Petrels would hold a 20-point lead at halftime, 36-16.
In the second half, the Petrels led by as many as 23 points, and led by around 20 points for the vast majority of the half. Though Sewanee pulled to within 14 points in the final minute, the Petrels fairly easily cruised to a 16-point victory.
The Petrels outshot Sewanee 49 percent to 40 percent, and outshot them from the 3-point line 48 percent to 21 percent. The Petrels outrebounded the Tigers 38-33.
Sophomore center Jordan Kinney continued his excellent play of late, scoring 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 6-of-6 free-throw shooting. Senior guard Branden Jovaag scored 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 5-of-9 3-point shooting. Senior guard Christian Molinet added 10 points of his own on 4-of-5 shooting and four assists.
The Petrels will next take the floor Friday night, when they travel to Jackson, Miss., to take on Millsaps. The game will tip off at approximately 9 p.m. They will then be in Birmingham, Ala., to take on Birmingham-Southern on Sunday afternoon.
