Oglethorpe senior guard Branden Jovaag was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team for Division III District 5 this week. This automatically nominates him for the Capital One Academic All-America team.
Jovaag is a senior economics major and will graduate in May. Head coach Philip Ponder expressed how pleased he is with Jovaag's recognition. "I'm extremely proud of Branden. He epitomizes the term student-athlete," Ponder said. "He has put in hours and hours of hard work both on the court and towards his academics to achieve this designation. It is a well-deserved honor."
The Capital One Academic All-District and All-America teams are voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be nominated for the All-District teams, a student-athlete who has attended their institution for at least a calendar year has to have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.3 or greater and be a participant in at least half of their team's games during the season. Student-athletes who earn All-District honors are automatically nominated for Academic All-America honors.
Jovaag is one of five players to make the Division III District 5 team. The others are senior Zac Richards from SAA-rival Birmingham-Southern, senior Alex Greven from crosstown-rival Emory, senior Colton Hunt from Randolph, and junior Taylor Allen from Westminster (Mo.).
