Junior guard Justin Edwards of the Oglethorpe men's basketball team has been named the SAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his efforts in the team's victories over conference opponents Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps. It marks the first time that Edwards his taken the honor, and the second time this season that a Stormy Petrel has done so (Mike Turner, Dec. 5).
Edwards might have had his best week of the season so far, helping the Stormy Petrels to a pair of home wins. He averaged 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game over the course of the weekend, shooting 58 percent from the field in the process. His best game of the two came in Sunday's 90-72 victory over Millsaps, in which he scored 27 points on 8-of-14 from the field and 11-of-15 from the free throw line while grabbing 9 rebounds and passing out 4 assists. For the season, Edwards is tied for fourth in the league is scoring at 15.4 per game, and tied for fifth in the league in assists with 3.8 per contest.
"Justin has been playing his best ball of the season," said Oglethorpe head coach Philip Ponder. "He's picked up his rebounding of late, and has done a really good job of getting us into our offense these past few games. He had a great weekend, and this is well deserved."
Edwards and the rest of the Petrels now get set for Senior Night at Dorough Field House, as they'll take on Berry Saturday at 8 p.m. in their final game of the regular season. After that, they'll head to Memphis, Tennessee, for the SAA Tournament the following weekend.
