The men's golf team finished the 2011 Golfweek Fall Invitational in fourth place on Tuesday evening. Playing in a field that featured 12 of the nation's 25 best teams, the Petrels fired the low round of the tourney (and their season) in round three to secure the fourth place result.
Held on the Raven Course in Sandestin, Florida, the three-day Invitational began with two extremely windy days that drove scores up. The Petrels fired a team-total of 303 (+11) on day one to stand in seventh place and battled the winds on day two with a 305 (+13) to move into sixth position. In today's final round, however, the Petrels carded a 278 (-6), 10 strokes better than the next closest team, to climb into a fourth place overall finish.
Per Golfstat rankings, the nation's No. 7 team, Guilford, won the event with a three-day total of 874, twelve strokes ahead of the Petrels total of 886. The nation's No. 1 ranked team, Texas-Tyler, finished just three strokes ahead of an Oglethorpe squad that posted head-to-head victories over the nation's No.'s 2, 4, 8, 12, 15 and 17 ranked squads, per Golfstat.
Tuesday's final round was highlighted by freshman Anthony Maccaglia carding an ace on the par-3 sixth hole. Maccaglia went on to shoot a 4-under 67 to finish the event in a tie for third place at even par overall. Seniors Matt Rebitch and Jordan Hall each carded three-day totals of 226 (+13) to record a tied for 25th place finish. Junior Eric Quinn carded a total of 229 (+16) to finish tied for 40th and sophomore Hayden Jones (232, +19) came home tied for 48th overall.
With another top-5 finish in another elite event loaded with top teams, Oglethorpe has had an excellent fall season positioning themselves for another invite to the NCAA Championships. The Petrels are back in action next week when Oglethorpe hosts the Royal Lakes Fall Classic.
