The Oglethorpe men's golf team lapped the field at the inaugural SAA Fall Championship this weekend, taking first place by 28 strokes over second-place Centre. The win marks the Petrels' third straight tournament win, dating back to the 2011-12 season. Oglethorpe has won the SCAC Championship, the NCAA Division III Championship, and now the SAA Fall Championship in succession. They won all three tournaments by at least 20 strokes, and all three were wire-to-wire victories.
Sophomore Anthony Maccaglia won the individual tournament championship medal, shooting a five-under 67 on the final day to come from eight strokes back to win the championship. He won by two strokes over fellow Stormy Petrel Hayden Jones. The Oglethorpe junior shot a par 72 on the final day to finish with a total of 142. It was his fourth straight runner-up finish.
All six of Oglethorpe's individual participants finished in the Top 8 for the tournament. Petrel junior Anthony Amodeo brought home a third-place finish in a tie, shooting a final day 75 for a total of 143 for the tournament. Sophomore Will Morrow finished fifth for the tournament, shooting a weekend total of 147 (73-74). Senior Eric Quinn finished sixth with a two-day total of 148, and freshman Braden Braer followed with an impressive eighth-place finish (151).
The five-player All-Tournament Team featured four Petrels: Maccaglia, Jones, Amodeo and Morrow.
The Petrels will next be in action next week, when they will participate in The Gordin Classic at the Columbus Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. The first round of the tournament will take place on October 1.
