The Oglethorpe men's golf team was beaten by two red hot teams in Wittenberg and Methodist today in Round 3 of The Gordin Classic. Wittenberg fired an impressive closing two-over 290 to beat the Petrels by nine today and 11 over the three-day event.
Methodist, with the low round of the day, jumped out to a quick lead in Round 3 as they played the front nine very well and took a small lead over both Oglethorpe and Wittenberg into the back nine. Wittenberg, however, caught fire on the final nine holes, highlighted by Alex Andrews birdieing 15, 16 and 17 and making a spectacular save of par on 18 to overtake Methodist by two strokes and win The Gordin. Andrews' heroics also pushed him one stroke ahead of Oglethorpe's Anthony Maccaglia, who fired a closing 72 to go with rounds of 72 and 69 yesterday for a three-day total of 213. Andrews played the final four holes in three-under to win the individual medal with a four-under 212 and lift his team to victory in the process.
Maccaglia's three-under 213 earned runner-up honors and junior Hayden Jones finished fifth at 215. Other Oglethorpe scores of note include Anthony Amodeo at 225, good for 22nd place; Will Morrow at 228, tied for 35th; and Eric Quinn at 229, finishing the week tied for 37th.
Oglethorpe hosts the Royal Lakes Invitational next Monday and Tuesday during their fall break in Flowery Branch. Ga., at the picturesque Royal Lakes Golf and Country Club October 8-9.
