The Oglethorpe men's golf team will see two members take part in the 2012 Patriot All-America tournament starting next Saturday, Dec. 29, and running through New Year's Eve. Junior Hayden Jones and sophomore Anthony Maccaglia will be competing in the three-day event at The Wigwam golf course in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
The 54-hole event is open to all current men's college golf All-Americans at every level. Student-athletes from NCAA Divisions I, II and III; the NAIA; and the NJCAA (junior college) will all be competing at the tournament, as will current American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) All-Americans who are freshmen at NCAA institutions.
In addition, each player in the tournament is given a golf bag with the name of a fallen American soldier that they will represent during the tournament. Maccaglia and Jones will be representing two local fallen soldiers: Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 Dennis P. Hay from Valdosta, Ga., and Army Specialist Justin R. Jarrett from Jonesboro, Ga.
Jones and Maccaglia will be the first two Petrels ever to compete in this event, which is in it's second year.
"We are extremely excited to have two golfers competing in the Patriot All-America for the first time," said Oglethorpe head men's coach Jim Owen. "Anthony and Hayden will be competing with some of the best college golfers in America, and it is an excellent testament to them and our program as a whole that they are able to compete in an event like this."
