Sophomore Anthony Maccaglia of the Oglethorpe men's golf team earned SAA Men's Golfer of the Week honors today for winning the individual medal during Oglethorpe's victory at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate last weekend.
Maccaglia sank an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole to edge senior teammate Eric Quinn by one stroke for individual medalist honors. Maccaglia followed up his sterling first-round 68 with a final-round 77 for a two-day total of 145 to earn his fourth collegiate golf tournament medal and the first individual victory by a Petrel at Callaway Gardens since Taylor Urbanski in 2005. Maccaglia was one of three Petrels golfers to receive all-tournament honors, along with Quinn and junior Anthony Amodeo.
Maccaglia currently stands as the second-rated Division III player in the nation based on Golfstat's head-to-head ranking method, and is currently the 15th-ranked player in all of college golf based on the Golfstat Cup rankings.
Maccaglia and the rest of the Stormy Petrels will again take the course next Friday through Sunday, when they host the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Ga.
