The Oglethorpe men's golf team took a third-place finish in the three-day Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational from Pine Lakes Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Ga., finishing 11 strokes behind tournament-winner Illinois Wesleyan.
Methodist took second place, eight strokes back, while Emory and Transylvania rounded out the top five, 20 and 22 strokes back of Illinois Wesleyan, respectively.
Sophomore Anthony Maccaglia made a final-day push and wound up as the lowest-scoring Petrel, finishing third with a three-day total of 218. He finished just one stroke back of the co-medalists, Stefan Johnson from Illinois Wesleyan and Brad Shigezawa from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Mike Wesko of Methodist and Jantzen Latham from Transylvania rounded out the individual top five, finishing two and three strokes back, respectively.
Junior Anthony Amodeo had been the low Petrel for the first two days, but he shot a final-round 77 and dropped back a bit. He still garnered a Top 10 finish, winding up in a ninth-place tie with a three-day total of 222, still just five back of the co-medalists. Senior Eric Quinn finished with a tie for 18th place and a three-day total of 225, eight strokes back. Junior Hayden Jones tied for 40th after shooting a three-day total of 229, 12 back of the medalists. Sophomore Will Morrow rounded out the day for the Petrels, finishing in a tie for 63rd, 16 strokes back.
The Petrels still have not finished worse then third in any event which they've entered this academic year. They next travel to Jacksonville, N.C., next weekend, where they participate in the Camp Lejeune Championship on Paradise Point Golf Course.
