Sophomore Patrick Mills of the Oglethorpe men's golf team got his spring season off to an outstanding start early this week, earning a share of the SAA Men's Golfer of the Week award with this third-place finish at the Callaway Gardens Collegiate Invitational in Pine Mountain. The award marks the first such honor of Mills' career.
Mills put up an even-par round of 72 in Tuesday's final round, moving himself into a third-place tie with a 2-day total of 2-over 146, finishing just a single stroke behind a tie for the individual medal.
In the process, he helped his team to vault five spots up the leaderboard on Tuesday, going from a tie for eighth entering the final round to a third-place overall finish at the end of the day. They shot 9-over 297 on Tuesday, the low team score of the round, and finished at 24-over 600 for the tournament, four strokes behind champions Emory.
Mills finished tied with Sewanee's Gray Matthews for the tournament, and the two golfers shared SAA Men's Golfer of the Week honors. Matthews shot back-to-back rounds of 1-over 73.
"Mills was very solid all week for us," said Oglethorpe director of golf Jim Owen, "and his consistent outstanding play on both days really helped us work our way back into the top three of this tournament. In fact, he was just a couple pars away from winning the tournament outright. He joins a long line of players who have won conference player of the week honors while golfing for our program, and I look forward to outstanding things from him as we go forward this spring."
Mills and the rest of the Stormy Petrels will travel to Jekyll Island to host the annual Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational Friday through Sunday, March 17 through 19.
