The men's lacrosse team lost to Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala. on Saturday afternoon in their season opener by the score of 12-5. The Hawks used a dominant first quarter in which they outscored the Petrels 5-0 as the springboard to their victory.
Neither side tallied a goal in the game's first 6 minutes until the Hawks' Brandon Sewell struck to put Huntingdon out front at the 9:32 mark of the first quarter. The Hawks then enjoyed 68 second stretch in which they notched three goals to suddenly up their lead to 4-0. The Hawks Gavin Carey registered an unassisted strike to with 1:34 on the clock to punctuate the dominant first 15 minutes.
Oglethorpe regrouped though to tally two of the three goals scored in a defensive second quarter. Arness Holsey broke the ice for the Petrels with an unassisted strike at the 11:41 mark of the second quarter. Following a Hawks strike, Petrel freshman Jake Godwin netted his first collegiate goal on a feed from Michael Kasmarik to make the score 6-2 at halftime.
The third quarter featured two Oglethorpe goals sandwiched between two Huntingdon tallies. Kasmarik scored his first goal of the season and Godwin followed with another goal of his own to make the score 7-4 and give the Petrels some life. The Hawks, however, closed the door by netting the next two strikes to reestablish a five goal margin the Petrels could not overcome.
Kasmarik added another tally in the fourth on an assist from freshman Ben Caoili to give him a team-high 5 points on the afternoon.
The Petrels will look to even up their record when they face Reinhardt next Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The game will be played on the campus of South Forsyth High School.
