The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team made the short trip to Waleska, Ga., Friday afternoon to take on Reinhardt, but came away with a 14-8 defeat.
The Petrels fell behind 2-0 early in the contest, but freshman Matt Hardwick tallied a goal to cut the deficit in half with 7:21 to play in the first quarter. The home-standing Eagles tallied again before the end of the period, however, taking a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
In the second, the Petrels scored four goals in a row to take a 5-3 lead. Freshman Connor Moore started off the scoring, then Hardwick followed two minutes later on an assist from Moore to tie the game at 3-3 with 10 minutes left in the period. Sophomore Jake Godwin followed up two minutes after that off an assist from sophomore Ben Caoili giving Oglethorpe the lead, and junior Arness Holsey finished the run off an assist from freshman John Shramek with 6:03 remaining in the half.
Reinhardt followed up the Oglethorpe run with three straight goals of their own, retaking the lead, but Oglethorpe ended the half with a goal from freshman Kristen Hudson with 21 seconds remaining, sending the two teams to the break tied 6-6.
In the second half, though, the Eagles took control of the game. They outscored the Stormy Petrels 4-0 in the third quarter, taking a 10-6 lead. Then, after Oglethorpe got a goal from senior Nick Pizzo to start the fourth, trimming the deficit to 10-7, Reinhardt put the game away with four straight goals. They had a 14-7 lead after the last of them with three minutes remaining, and that was pretty much the game. The Petrels got a late goal from Godwin, but could get no closer.
The Eagles outshot the Stormy Petrels 59-19 over the course of the game. Goalkeeper Cooper O'Brien registered 25 saves on the afternoon, and Godwin and Harwick scored two goals each for the Petrels.
Oglethorpe next takes the field Sunday afternoon, when they take on Bridgewater (Va.) at 3 p.m. on the new Oglethorpe Track and Field.
