The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team fell on the road at Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon, losing to the Panthers, 23-3.
The Petrels fell behind big early in this one, finding themselves trailing 15-0 at halftime. The Panthers led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter, then scored nine more goals in the second.
The Petrels got two goals from freshman defender John Shramek and a goal from junior Arness Holsey in the third quarter, as Birmingham-Southern only outscored Oglethorpe 6-3 in the period, but that was all Oglethorpe would get offensivley.
The Petrels did hold the home-standing Panthers to only two goals in the fourth quarter, but the game was out of reach by that point, and Birmingham-Southern cruised to the 23-3 victory.
The Panthers outshot Oglethorpe by a whopping 60-15 margin, including 40-11 on goal. Birmingham-Southern scooped up 64 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 50, converted on 27 of 29 clear attempts to Oglethorpe's 18-of-37, and converted on both their extra-man opportunities while Oglethorpe went 0-for-2.
Shramek's two goals came on two shots, and he scooped four ground balls. Holsey picked up 10 ground balls on the afternoon. Goalie Cooper O'Brien stopped 17 shots.
The loss drops the Petrels to 2-13 on the season. They finish 0-7 in SAA play, and will travel to conference No. 1 seed Sewanee next weekend for the SAA quarterfinals.
