The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team fell on the road at Piedmont Wednesday night, losing 19-8 in Demorest, Ga.
The Stormy Petrels stayed in the game with four goals from senior attackman Arness Holsey, who put 11 of his 14 shots on goal and caused three turnovers. Freshman Karl Dickey also recorded 13 saves in his debut as the starting goalie for the Petrels. However, the Petrels could not fight off the home-standing Lions, in the end.
After falling behind 2-0, the Petrels fought back to within a goal, 3-2, with 5:29 left in the first half, on a goal from freshman Zach Pagan. However, four straight Piedmont goals made it 7-2 with 9:51 left in the first half and it continued from there, with the home team taking an 11-4 lead into halftime. It would have been 11-3 if not for Pagan's second goal of the game with 24 seconds left in the half.
Oglethorpe played better in the second half, but still was outscored 8-4 over the course of the third and fourth periods.
For the game, the Petrels were outshot 52-35, including 32-22 on goal. They committed 26 turnovers to Piedmont's 18, were successful on 14-of-20 clears to the Lions' 22-of-24, and were just 2-of-12 on extra-man opportunities to their opponents' 5-of-9.
The 0-3 Petrels will next take on the club team from Mississippi State in an exhibition game on Saturday at 8 p.m. on the Oglethorpe Track and Field. Then on Tuesday, they'll travel to West Point, Ga., to take on Point at 5:30 p.m.
