The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team could not overcome a difficult start against Hendrix in Conway, Ark., Saturday, falling the home-standing Warriors, 23-5.
The Stormy Petrels fell behind 6-0 after the first quarter in Conway. They got a goal back early in the second when midfielder Jake Godwin finished on an assist from fellow midfielder Brayden Simpson, but then fell behind 10-1 before scoring again with 2:52 remaining in the quarter, a goal that came from midfielder Hunter Dutton. The Petrels were behind 13-2 at halftime.
Attackman Zach Pagan tallied the first goal of the second half, making the score 13-3 with 13:13 left in the period, but the Warriors put the game away with four more goals, taking a 17-3 lead. Attackman Arness Holsey scored the final two Oglethorpe goals, a man-up goal in the third quarter and an even-strength goal in the fourth.
Holsey finished with those two goals on seven shots, while midfielder Ben Caoili and defenseman Eric Seymour scooped six ground balls apiece. Seymour caused three turnovers, as well. Goalie Cooper O'Brien scooped five ground balls and made 12 saves on the afternoon.
The Petrels were outshot 56-25, including 35-17 on goal. They won 10-of-32 faceoffs, were 1-for-3 on extra-man opportunities, were successful on 14-of-28 clear attempts, scooped 27 ground balls and committed 28 turnovers.
The Petrels fall to 3-8 in all games, 0-3 in SAA play. They will quickly get back to action, as they take on Rhodes in Memphis, Tenn., at 2 p.m. Eastern Sunday afternoon.
