Men's Lacrosse Drops Road Contest to Methodist

The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team got off to a rough start Sunday afternoon in Fayetteville, North Carolina, against the homestanding Methodist Monarchs, and were unable to recover in a 25-4 defeat. Methodist scored 13 goals in the opening quarter and outscored the visitors 19-1 over the opening half. The Stormy Petrels held them to 6 goals while scoring 3 in the second, but the damage was done. With the loss, the team fell to 0-3 on the young season.

Individually, the Petrels got a pair of goals from senior attackman Andrew Houghton, as he scored once in each half. Sophomore attackman Nathaniel Gillespie added a goal of his own on 6 shots, leading the team with 4 ground balls, as well. Freshman goalie Sean Merritt made 12 saves on 35 shots on goal faced over the opening three quarters.

The Monarchs scored the first 17 goals of the game over the opening 25 minutes of play. The Petrels got on the board with 7:59 remaining in the half when Houghton collected a pass from freshman defenseman Ryan Kozlowski and slinged it past the Methodist goalie, making it 17-1. The Monarchs ended the half with two more goals.

The second half was a much more even affair. The Monarchs scored the first four goals of the period, but the Petrels answered with two of their own late in the third quarter as Gillespie and Houghton both converted to make it 23-3. In the fourth quarter, freshman attackman Braden Draucek added one more for Oglethorpe with 11:09 remaining.

For the game, Methodist outshot Oglethorpe 64-23 overall and 40-10 in shots on goal. The Petrels did force 14 Methodist turnovers, and were 18-for-25 on clear attempts on the afternoon.

"This was a tough weekend for us on the road against two very good teams," said Oglethorpe head coach Nathan Young. "Hopefully, it will prove to be good experience for us down the road. We'll look to come home on Wednesday and come out playing well."

The Petrels will host the Huntingdon Hawks Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. After that, they'll head back on the road for a 4-game stretch away from home (three road games and a neutral-site contest.)
