Men's Lacrosse Falls to Piedmont in In-State Road Contest

The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team had a tough loss Sunday in Demorest against the Piedmont Lions. The Lions started the game with a 6-0 run and wound up with a 22-4 victory over the Stormy Petrels. This brings Oglethorpe to an 0-5 record for the season. 

Early in the first half, the Lions went on a 6-0 run before sophomore attackman Nathaniel Gillespie tallied an unassisted goal for the Petrels with 7:39 remaining in the first half, bringing the game to 6-1. Shortly after, senior attackman Andrew Houghton tallied a goal with an assist from Gillespie, bringing the score to 7-2. The Lions ended the half with one more goal and the Petrels went into the half down 8-2. 

The second half started quickly with three consecutive goals by the Lions at 13:28, 12:22 and 7:20 of the third quarter. Freshman attackman Braden Draucek answered for the Petrels with an unassisted goal at 8:08, bringing the score to 11-3. The Lions responded with an 11-0 run, putting the game away and bringing the score to 22-3. The Petrels tallied one more goal with 2:49 left in the game, scored by freshman defenseman Ryan Kozlowski

Freshman goalie Sean Merritt recorded 22 saves and nine ground balls for the evening. Sophomore defenseman Andrew Kwapil scooped up 6 ground balls while causing 4 turnovers. Freshman middie Cameron Ritter and Gillespie each picked up three ground balls for the evening, as well. Gillespie tallied both a goal and an assist.

The Stormy Petrels committed 23 turnovers to the Lion's 10, were outshot by the Lions 74-24, and picked up 26 ground balls to the Lion's 36. The Lions outshot the Petrels 44-14 on goal.

The Petrels will travel to Mount Berry for their SAA opener Wednesday night at 6 p.m. After that, they'll head to West Virginia for their spring break trip. They'll take on Bethany Saturday at 1 p.m, then go against Franciscan in a neutral site game Monday, March 6, at 2 p.m.
