The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team lost an SAA road matchup Saturday, falling to the homestanding Centre Colonels 23-3. The result dropped the team to 1-13 on the season overall and 1-4 in SAA play.
The Colonels powered over the Petrels in the first eight minutes of the game, going on a 4-0 run. Freshman defenseman Ryan Kozlowski ended the Colonels' 4-0 run with a goal off an assist from sophomore attackman Nathaniel Gillespie, making the score 4-1. The Colonels reacted with another run that extended into the second period. They went into halftime leading 13-1.
Gillespie scored the opening goal of the second half to bring the score to 13-2 with 11:59 remaining in the contest. He finished off an assist from junior middie Jibril Stapleton. Unfortunately, the Colonels followed behind with an 8-0 run to enter the fourth period ahead 18-2. Kozlowski tallied his second goal of the game at 5:43 in the fourth period to make the score 21-3. The Colonels responded with two more goals to end the game 23-3.
Kozlowski led the Petrels with 2 goals, scoring on both of his shots and tallying a ground ball. Freshman goalie Sean Merritt recorded 22 saves for the contest. Gillespie tallied a goal and an assist while sophomore middie Tyler Stridiron caused 3 Centre turnovers.
Overall, the Petrels were outshot 62-10, committed 17 turnovers to the Colonels' 9, and were 21-for-25 on clears.
"This was a tough game," said Oglethorpe head coach Nathan Young, "but we'll bounce back and be ready to take on Sewanee at home tomorrow."
The Petrels will now travel back home to take on the visiting Sewanee Tigers. This contest will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. on the Oglethorpe Track and Field, and will be the Petrels' final home game of the season.
