Junior defenseman Andrew Kwapil of the Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team was named the SAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week Monday by the league's office for his efforts in the Stormy Petrels' 1-1 week with a 9-5 victory over Mount St. Joseph on Friday. It marked the second such award of his career.
Kwapil had his best week of the season for the Petrels. In a win against Mount St. Joseph, Kwapil caused seven turnovers and scooped up four ground balls. In Wednesday's 9-4 loss to Muskingum, Kwapil scooped six ground balls and caused two turnovers. Overall, he is third in the SAA in caused turnovers on the season, totaling 13.
"This is the second time that Andrew has earned this recognition during his time here at Oglethorpe," said Oglethorpe head coach Zach Taylor, "and it's well-deserved. He's the glue that holds our defense together and we're looking forward to more of these kinds of performances from him over the remainder of the season."
Kwapil and the rest of the Stormy Petrels will be back in action Tuesday night when they welcome Dallas to the Oglethorpe Track and Field at 7 p.m. After that, they'll hit the road for three consecutive SAA games, starting with a trip to Conway, Arkansas, to take on Hendrix on Friday and continuing with a game against Rhodes on Sunday in Memphis, Tennessee.
