Men Upended by Eagles
The Oglethorpe University men's soccer team lost for the first time in the 2009 season on Sunday afternoon when they fell to the University of the Ozarks Eagles on Salamone Field, 2-1.
The Eagles jumped in front of the Petrels in the game's 24th
minute on a goal by Scott Janers that was assisted by Brandon
Vancleave. The Ozarks pushed their lead to 2-0 early in the second
half when Tate Ramirez found the back of the net.
It looked as though Oglethorpe would succomb quietely until a
furious finish nearly eqaulized the game. With under five minutes
remaining, E.J. Ovie-Ogodo took a pass from Russell Thompson and
scored past the Ozarks keeper. Then, with under a minute left, the
Petrels had two near-goals, one off the foot of Ovie-Ogodo and the
other from Gardar Sigurdsson. Both shots sailed wide left by only a
matter of inches.
For the game, Oglethorpe outshot the Ozarks 15-12 but still came up
on the losing side of the contest. With the result, the Petrels are
now 2-1 on the season and will get set to face off with Piedmont
College in Demorest, Georgia on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
