The men's soccer season got underway on Salamone Field today as Oglethorpe and Reinhardt played to a spirited 1-1 tie to start the season.
The teams used the first half to sort one another out before the offensive fireworks got going in the second stanza. After the 0-0 first half came to a close, Reinhardt drew first blood by netting an unassisted goal from Mark Withers in the game's 55th minute.
The Petrels spent the next 15 minutes battling for the equalizer when Reinhardt's Jack Coulton received his second yellow of the game to be disqualified and give Oglethorpe a man advantage. Less than a minute later, it paid off as freshman Nick Williamson found Nathan Post whose high cross beat Eagles keeper to know the score.
Oglethorpe mustered several late chances against an Eagles squad that was holding on for dear life but the Petrels could not break through for the game winner and the contest finished in a 1-1 tie.
Oglethorpe outshot Reinhardt 10-9 in the match and held a 6-5 advantage in corners taken.
The Petrels are back in action this Saturday as the participate in the Sonny Carter Invitational at Emory Univerisity. Oglethorpe faces Hampden Sydney at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Illinois Wesleyan at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
