The men's soccer team clinched a berth in the inauguaral postseason SCAC Men's Soccer Tournament by routing Millsaps College on the road on Sunday evening, 7-3. Leading 2-1 at halftime, the Petrels exploded for 5 second half goals, four in a span of less than six minutes, to improve to 6-0 in SCAC play.
Carlos Gaston tallied the first of his three goals on the afternoon to give the Petrels a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. After the Majors equalized quickly, Nick Williamson gave Oglethorpe a 2-1 lead heading into the break on a 43rd minute strike assisted by Gaston, who tallied 7 points in the win.
Mark Lavery scored off a corner kick from Sean King to open up a 3-1 advantage early in the second half. Then, from the 70:03 mark until 76:02, Oglethorpe blasted four goals past the Majors to blow the contest wide open. Gaston began the flurry and Ivan Tchangam finished it, with Nathan Post and Gaston scoring the middle tallies of the four goal run.
The Petrels are now 12-2-0 on the season, currently owning the best winning percentage in school history. A win over Birmingham-Southern this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. would match the school record for wins (13) in a season.
The University will celebrate 50 years of soccer on the Oglethorpe campus during the Birmingham-Southern contest and all former players are encouraged to attend.
