The 2011 men's soccer team became the winningest squad in program history on Tuesday afternoon by dispatching LaGrange College on Salamone Field, 4-1. The record-setting win was also the 25th ranked Petrels' school-best 11th straight to run the team's record to 14-2-0 overall.
The Petrels had an easy time of it in setting the school mark as they dominated play against the 2-12 Panthers from the start. Oglethorpe put three in the back of the net in the first half and the Panthers only tally of the game was an own-goal scored by Oglethorpe on a misdirected header. To complete the domination, Oglethorpe outshot LaGrange by a staggering 42-7 margin.
Nick Williamson got the scoring going in just the game's second minute when he chipped a feed from Carlos Gaston over the helpless Panther keeper. Eight minutes later, the lead swelled to two goals when Gaston fired a shot into the net from the right flank off a through ball played by Ben Robertson. After the Petrels surrendered the own goal in the 12th minute they rallied to reclaim their two-goal lead late in the half when Niko Papanikolopoulos headed home a Sean King corner kick.
Despite only notching one second half goal the Petrels were still in top form, blasting 23 shots to the Panthers 2. Nick Williamson tallied his second goal of the contest in the 60th minute when he played a deflection off a throw-in to the box into the back of the net.
The Petrels can set even more school history on Friday when they square off with Centre College. At 7-0 in SCAC play, an 8th conference win for the Petrels would be the most ever recorded by a team in Oglethorpe's 20-years of SCAC play. Action against the Colonels begins at 3:00 p.m. as Oglethorpe will put their No. 25 national ranking on the line.
