The Oglethorpe men's soccer team started the new season off on the right foot over the Labor Day weekend, defeating Kean and Brewton-Parker to win the Sonny Carter Invitational hosted by Emory. The Petrels were the only team of the four participants to record two victories on the weekend, netting them the championship of the league-style tournament.
The Petrels got off to a flying start, as they scored three goals in the first half of their first game with Kean on Friday. They took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game on a Kean own goal. Then, forward Jakub Madej took over for the remaining portion of the first half. In the 23rd minute, he took assists from midfielder Ben Robertson and forward Nick Williamson and scored from right in front of the net to give the Petrels a 2-0 lead. He then all but put the game away later in the first half, scoring in the 32nd minute off an assist from midfielder Aleks Tanjga.
The Petrels took a 3-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Oglethorpe goalkeeper Frank Petersen withstood a Kean onslaught, facing six shots on goal and saving five of them. Overall, he finished the game with nine saves, which allowed Oglethorpe to cruise home with a 3-1 victory.
In the second game, the Petrels blitzed Brewton-Parker, 7-1, easily locking up the tournament championship after Emory and Brewton-Parker tied the previous day. Williamson got the Petrels off to a 1-0 start in the 16th minute when he took a pass from defender Justin Graves, made a long run into the box and chipped it past the Brewton-Parker keeper.
The Barons tied the game in the 35th, but it was all Oglethorpe from that point on. Oglethorpe got the goal right back in the 38th minute when Carlos Gaston knocked home a Nick Muntean cross. They took a 3-1 lead in the 40th minute on a Sean King penalty kick, then they took a 4-1 lead into halftime after Austin Fiddler got on the end of a long pass from Graves and banged home another one.
It was more of the same from the Petrels in the second half, as the Petrels quickly expanded their lead to 5-1 in the 52nd minute with a Muntean goal off a cross from Tanjga. Carter Gill gave Oglethorpe a five-goal lead off assists from Gaston and Ryan Nick in the 66th minute, and Reese Jackson completed the scoring for the Petrels in the 77th off assists from Fiddler and Nick.
The wins give the Petrels a 2-0 start on the young season. They'll be back in action this weekend when they travel up to Berry College to participate in the Winshape Invitational. They will play Averett on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Guilford on Sunday at 3 p.m.
