From the office of the Southern Athletic Association:
The Oglethorpe University athletics department will celebrate joining the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) at this Saturday's men's and women's soccer games between the Stormy Petrels and the Tigers of Sewanee. The opening women's game on Oglethorpe's historic campus is scheduled to kick-off at 2 p.m. Eastern.
To commemorate the occasion, promotional fliers about the league will be distributed and public address announcements will highlight the conference's eight member institutions throughout the contest.
"We're excited to have this opportunity to celebrate the formation of this outstanding league on each of our eight members' campuses," said SAA commissioner Jay Gardiner, who will be in attendance for the momentous occasion. "We've looked forward to this date since the league was officially formed in the summer of 2011."
Committed to fostering athletic competition and cooperation among academically selective, residential liberal arts colleges located in the southeast, the SAA was created by the Council of Presidents in June 2011. Spanning six states, the SAA includes Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama, Centre College in Kentucky, Hendrix College in Arkansas, Millsaps College in Mississippi, Oglethorpe University and Berry College in Georgia, and Rhodes College and Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee.
