Men's Soccer Suffers Tough Loss to Berry, 2-1

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team suffered another tough loss on Saturday, dropping their regular-season finale to Berry, 2-1. The loss means that the Petrels finish the regular season 8-6, 2-5 in SAA play.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie over the first half, and the second half started very well for the Stormy Petrels. Midfielder Nick Williamson scored the go-ahead goal for the visiting side in the 51st minute from a deflection off the Berry goalkeeper.

However, Berry was able to score the equalizer in the 67th minute. Then things turned from bad to worse for the Petrels, as midfielder Sean King picked up a red card in the 78th minute, meaning that Oglethorpe would play the rest of the game with 10 men.

The Petrels held out for 12 minutes, but in the 90th minute, just 29 seconds from the end of regulation time, Berry scored the game-winner to take the 2-1 victory.

The Petrels were outshot by the Vikings 15-10, and Berry took 11 corner kicks to Oglethorpe's three.

Oglethorpe goalkeeper Frank Petersen tallied eight saves on the day for the Petrels.

The loss means that the Petrels own the No. 6 seed for next weekend's SAA Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. They will face host-team and No. 3 seed Birmingham Southern in the quarterfinals Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time.
