Men's Soccer Suffers Season's First Loss in Home Opener

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team fell 2-0 to NAIA opponent Truett McConnell in their home opener Wednesday evening at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, dropping to 4-1 on the young season.

The visiting Bears got off on the right foot against an Oglethorpe team that was resting most of their starters, scoring within the first 17 minutes. Truett McConnell held the possession advantage for most of the opening half of play. The Petrels were able to get forward into attack several times, but were unable to complete the final pass that would unlock the Bears defense. The visitors outshot Oglethorpe 8-1 in the first half, but the home side went into the halftime break down just 1-0.

The Petrels enjoyed more of the possession in the second half, but were still unable to find many opportunities on goal, as the Truett McConnell defense was able to shut them down for the most part. The Bears got their second goal off a well-struck free kick from Joao Costa, his second of the game, in the 59th minute. Oglethorpe was unable to work their way back into the game from there, as Truett McConnell outshot them 9-1 in the second half.

For the game, the visitors outshot the Petrels 17-2 overall, including an 8-0 mark in shots on goal. The Petrels did take one more corner kick than the visitors, 3-2. Oglethorpe senior goalkeeper Robert Goldin recorded five saves in his first action of the season.

"Today's game didn't have the outcome we wanted," said Oglethorpe head coach Jon Akin, "but we were able to give a bunch of guys experience that had played limited minutes coming into today. We'll move forward from this into our big non-conference matchup with Lynchburg this weekend."

The Petrels, ranked No. 12 in the United Soccer Coaches poll, will take on the visiting Hornets, who are ranked 23rd in the D3soccer.com poll, at 1 p.m. Sunday from the Oglethorpe Track and Field. After that, Oglethorpe will get ready for their SAA opener Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. against Centre at the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
