Senior goalkeeper Luke Whelan of the Oglethorpe men's soccer team earned SAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors from the league office on Monday after leading his team to three victories over the course of the week.
Whelan was instrumental in the Stormy Petrels' 3-0 record over the course of last week, allowing just one goal over 225 minutes of action in victories over No. 17 Washington (Missouri), Hendrix and Rhodes. Whelan earned a shutout in the 1-0 victory over Rhodes, and finished the week with a 0.40 goals against average (GAA) and an .800 save percentage. For the season, Whelan is second in the SAA in GAA (0.57) and first in goals against (5). He is also third in the league in save percentage (.808). Whelan leads the SAA in wins (7) and is fifth in shutouts (3).
"Luke continues to be outstanding for us this year, and I'm glad he's won recognition as the SAA Defensive Player of the Week," said Oglethorpe head coach Jon Akin. "He played very well for us last week and has been one of the best goalkeepers in the conference both years he's been here at Oglethorpe. We'll continue to need him down the stretch."
Whelan and the rest of the Petrels will return to Atlanta this weekend for a pair of SAA showdowns. They'll take on Millsaps Friday at 7:30 p.m. on the Oglethorpe Track and Field before hosting Birmingham-Southern Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
